Even here in New York City, it can be difficult to find a good vegan donut. Those that I have found are usually much more dense and cake-like, whereas I prefer a well risen, light and airy donut (like those at Dough here in NYC and at Busken Bakery in Cincinnati). Upon searching online I 'discovered' Dun-Well Doughnuts in Williamsburg, which has garnered much acclaim for their donuts with vegans and omnivores alike. Steps away from the L train, Dun-Well is a cozy hipster-friendly spot filled with vintage and reclaimed décor. When we arrived there were very few donuts left, so we ordered the Plain Glazed and Chai (they were completely sold out by the time we left). First, the donuts are very visually appealing. They are well-risen and look identical to those at my favorite aforementioned non-vegan donut shops. The first bite has the texture and airiness that I am looking for, and the glaze is just right. The caveat: there is a slightly unusual aftertaste that I can't quite pinpoint. For my personal taste, I think it may have benefitted from more vanilla or possibly a touch more salt? That being said, this is the best vegan donut that I have tried so far. Plus, Dun-Well is known for having a huge selection of inventive flavors, so I look forward to trying others that I may like more. Overall, Dun-Well is definitely worth a visit!
